A899 ALMOND VALLEY BRIDGE – CONCRETE REPAIRS

I am writing to inform you of major bridge works that are planned at Almond Valley Bridge commencing on 3 July 2017 and programmed to last 8 weeks.  This multi-span bridge carries the A899 Livingston Road (3-lane dual carriageway) over the River Almond and a number of local roads and footpaths in Livingston.  Although a number of repair works have taken place to Almond Valley Bridge in past years, the planned works are to repair the concrete edge beams over the length of both bridge decks and install sacrificial anodes.  These units will provide durability to the concrete repairs and prevent further deterioration of the reinforcing steel.  In addition, the drainage systems (2-types) will be cleaned and patch repairs undertaken on both carriageways.  Throughout the works it will be necessary to operate a contraflow on the A899 dual carriageway with a southbound contraflow operating first.

During the southbound contraflow one southbound lane of traffic will be taken onto the northbound deck with 2 lanes of traffic operating northbound.  The slip-on road southbound from Almond Road will be closed with vehicular traffic diverted northbound via Almond Interchange up to and around Cousland Interchange before heading southbound on the A899.

Once work is completed to the southbound deck the contraflow will be switched to operate on this deck.  Two lanes of traffic will continue southbound with only one lane northbound.  During this time the slip-on road southbound will then be opened but the northbound slip-off road at Almond Interchange will be closed.  Vehicular traffic will be diverted up and around Cousland Interchange before heading southbound on the A899 and slipping off at Almond Interchange.  Set up of the first contraflow is scheduled to commence on Sunday evening 2 July 2017 with this contraflow being fully operational on Monday 3 July 2017.

1 mile advance warning signs (4 number) and variable message signs (3 number) will be provided in advance of the works in order to inform the public of the forthcoming works.  The VMS signs will show a countdown of days before the works commence.  In addition, letter drops to properties locally around the bridge will take place, in an effort to notify the public in advance of the works.
